Your heat pump does double duty: it heats your home in winter and cools it in summer. That versatility makes heat pumps efficient, but also means that over time, wear and tear can take a toll on performance, reliability, and energy efficiency.
When repairs become frequent or expensive, replacing your system with a modern, high‑efficiency unit can actually save you money down the road. Modern heat pumps deliver improved comfort, better temperature control, and major efficiency gains.

Air Source Heat Pumps
Also called air-to-air heat pumps, these systems pull heat from the outside to transmit it to your home. Out of the three, air-source heat pumps are the least costly and take up minimal space. They are also more energy efficient in mild climates when comparing it to water sourced or ground heat pumps. However, for very cold climates, they’re less efficient than the standard water sourced and ground source heat pumps.
Ground Source Heat Pumps
Also known as geothermal heat pumps, they draw energy from the soil around the home. Since the ground temperature is typically much warmer than the air, ground source heat pumps are much more efficient during the winter months. A ground source also tends to be quieter and more durable than an air source system.
However, with efficiency comes a price. Ground source heat pumps are generally more expensive to install due to the need for excavation. Although there is a newer method called “direct-injection” that makes the process more efficient and affordable, this method will still cost more than a traditional air source system.
Water Source Heat Pumps
These systems pull energy from nearby water sources, like a pond or river, and transfer it into your home. Water source heat pumps are much easier to install in comparison to a ground source pump. On the other hand, water source heat pumps require a steady water flow, which means that during the winter months, a second heat source may be needed as a back-up.
No matter which heat pump type you choose, our technicians at Gold Medal provide complete installation and replacement services: from sizing and selecting the right system to professional installation and post-installation testing. We’ll make sure your new heat pump delivers efficient, reliable comfort all year long.

Yes! If your heat pump fails unexpectedly, Gold Medal offers 24/7 emergency heat pump services for homeowners in Central and Southern New Jersey, and parts of Eastern New York.
A heat pump works by transferring heat rather than generating it. In heating mode, it extracts heat from the outside air (even when it’s cold) and moves it indoors. In cooling mode, it reverses the process, removing heat from inside your home and releasing it outside, much like an air conditioner.
A furnace heats air by burning fuel (like gas or oil) or using electricity and distributes it through ducts, while a heat pump moves heat in or out of your home to provide both heating and cooling. Heat pumps are generally more energy-efficient, especially in moderate climates, because they transfer heat rather than generating it.
