Fall Home Maintenance Essential to Prepping for Winter
With cooler temperatures looming, now is the time to take care of those outside home maintenance chores. Fall is the best time to take advantage of the moderate weather to repair any damages.
Regular maintenance is essential for keeping your home in tip-top shape as well as ensuring that it is safe and efficient.
“I can’t emphasize enough to homeowners how taking time each month to inspect their dwelling can help spot problems that may lead to larger issues,” said Mike Agugliaro, Gold Medal Service’s co-founder. “Following our maintenance checklist on a regular basis can help a home look its best, keep utility bills down and most importantly, prevent more costly repairs in the future.”
Taking care of a home’s exterior can prevent major hassles in the middle of winter. Clean out the gutters and downspouts and inspect the roof and chimney for cracks and damage.
Ice, rain, snow and wind combined with rapidly changing temperatures and humidity wreak havoc on roofs. Without it functioning properly, water damage can occur which causes deterioration to insulation, wood and drywall, making electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems vulnerable. It’s better to proactively deal with repairs than to discover a leaky roof during a snowstorm.
After leaves have fallen, clean out the gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters are one of the major causes of ice dams. Replace old or damaged gutters with new ones that have built-in leaf guards.
Also shut off outdoor water valves. Any water left in exterior pipes and faucets can freeze and expand breaking the pipes.
Check to see that all of your snow equipment is up and running. When snow arrives you’ll want to have shovels, roof rakes and snow blowers handy.
Moving to the inside of the home, check windows and doors for air leaks and install weather stripping. Check basement windows for drafts, loose frames or cracked panes.
Have the furnace professionally inspected and test any generators, circuit breakers, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and water filters.
