Types of Electrical Switches for Your Home

Isn't it amazing how you can control essentially any light (and sometimes appliance) in your home just by flipping a switch? However, you may not be getting the full benefit of light switches if you aren’t installing the best ones in your home. For the most convenience and ease, consider adding these types of electrical switches to your home.

Single-Pole Switches

These are the switches you probably already have in your house. They have a simple on/off function and can hold about 15 to 20 amps. This is the switch that you flip on when you walk into your average room.

Double-Pole Switch

Double pole switches can carry more amps than single-pole ones. Speaking, technically, rather than opening a connection to a hot or neutral wire, these switches open contact between two hot wires at the same time. They are typically used in industrial settings or to control larger appliances, such as your furnace, water heater, or the like.

Three-Way Switch

Have you ever sat at one side of a large room and wanted to turn the lights off, but didn't want to walk all the way to the other side? That's where 3-way switches come in. These allow you to control a light from two different locations and are great to install in larger rooms to allow for less travel.

Dimmer Switch

Dimmer switches do just what their name implies: allow you to control the brightness or dimness of the lights in a room. They're great to install in spaces like your living room or bedroom, and would even be nice to have in a bathroom (if you would like to shower in a dimmer environment).
